John Leaning

John Leaning was born in San Francisco, CA, but moved east with his family when he was a youngster. A graduate of Wilbraham Academy and George Washington University, John returned to his roots to begin his career as a newspaperman with the San Francisco Chronicle in 1968. He later moved back east, and worked in Washington DC for Prentice-Hall’s weekly business report, and then moved to Vermont, where he worked for the daily Bennington Banner. John moved to the Cape in the late 1970s, working first for the Cape Codder, and later for the Cape Cod Times, where he was Lower Cape Bureau Chief for 19 years until his retirement in 2004. John joined American Heritage Realty inJanuary 2005. Married, with one “horse crazy” daughter, John lives in Brewster, where he enjoys swimming, boating and fishing in Cape Cod Bay. He strives to maintain a vegetable garden, reads avidly and enjoys maintaining friendships and contacts made during his nearly two decades with the Cape’s only daily newspaper.

Approximately six hundred parcels of private property lie within the bounds of the Cape Cod National Seashore.

At its creation in 1961, the National Park Service announced that it would eventually acquire a portion of the existing dwellings within its confines.

In 1985, the Land Protection Plan for the Cape Cod National Seashore was adopted, with definitive guidelines for the use of these private properties.
